EXERCISE: HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH?

Exercising a large breed puppy like a Newfoundland requires special attention and care due to their rapid growth and potential joint issues. While exercise is essential for their physical and mental well-being, it's crucial to strike a balance to avoid overexertion and potential harm to their developing bones and joints. Here are some safe exercise guidelines for a large breed puppy like a Newfoundland:

• Low-impact activities: Focus on low-impact exercises that are easier on their growing joints. Activities like walking, slow jogging, or swimming are excellent options. Swimming, in particular, is beneficial as it provides a full-body workout without putting stress on the joints.

• Short and frequent sessions: Puppies have lots of energy, but their bodies are still growing and developing. It's best to provide multiple short exercise sessions throughout the day rather than one long, intense session. Aim for 5 minutes of exercise per month of age (e.g., 10 minutes for a 2-month-old puppy, 15 minutes for a 3-month-old puppy, and so on).

• Avoid high-impact activities: Steer clear of activities that involve jumping, running on hard surfaces (like concrete), or going up and down stairs too frequently. Dry, deep sand (dunes) is also very hard on joints and should be avoided. These activities can put excessive strain on their developing joints and may lead to long-term issues.

• Off-leash play in safe areas: Allow your puppy to engage in off-leash play, but do so in a secure and safe area, such as a fenced yard or a dog park. This way, they can explore and play freely without the risk of running into traffic or other dangers.

• Mental stimulation: Besides physical exercise, mental stimulation is equally important for a puppy's development. Use puzzle toys, interactive games, and training sessions to keep their minds engaged and satisfied.

• No forced exercise: Avoid forcing your puppy to exercise if they seem tired or reluctant. Puppies are good at self-regulating, and if they need rest, they'll let you know. Overexertion can lead to injuries and harm their growth.

Remember, large breed puppies like Newfoundlands have specific exercise needs, and it's crucial to provide them with an appropriate balance of activity and rest to support their growth and development. By following these guidelines, you can help your puppy grow into a healthy and happy adult dog.
